Drink your way healthy

In theory you could because drinking water before a meal (for example) can reduce your food intake, reduce your hunger sensation and leave you feeling fuller, all the while saving you kilojoules. And it’s easy to drink more water, if you can get organised in advance. For example:

  1. 1    Put a jug or bottle in the fridge so you always have chilled water on hand.
  2. 2    Make it a habit to have a drink every time you take a break or visit the toilet.
  3. 3    Keep your water within reach. Have a bottle with you in the car, have it on your desk or a small one with you in your handbag.
  4. 4    Spread it out over the day – don’t get to the evening and realise you haven’t drunk enough and start guzzling late at night. It will only keep you up all night.
  5. 5    Encourage kids to drink – they are more susceptible to dehydration.
  6. 6    Add a slice of lemon or lime to your water or sip herbal teas if you don’t like drinking plain water.
  7. 7    Drink some water if you feel hungry. Many of us mistake hunger for thirst.
  8. 8    When you’re out, quench your thirst with a large glass of water before you consume any alcohol. Try alternating your drink with water.
